This is a five paragraph essay and follow the essay outline EXACTLY.
———————————–
In a well written five paragraph essay explain how Fitzgerald used his characters to demonstrate that the American Dream was a failure. Please use the exact outline that you were given.
LENGTH: 1-2 PAGES OR HOWEVER LONG AS NEEDED
THESIS: Fitzgerald uses characters to demonstrate that he feels the American dream is a failure.
Please follow the template below
INTRO PARAGRAPH.
Begin with a quote that you feel best echoes the sentiments of Fitzgerald about the American Dream. It can come from the novel but can be from another source. Your second sentence should provide a link to your thesis. It can be as simple as “this quote clearly echoes the sentiments of Fitzgerald regarding the American dream.” Next, state your thesis which is “Fitzgerald uses characters to demonstrate that he feels the American dream is a failure”. Finally list your supporting arguments. “This can be seen most clearly through the Buchanans, George Wilson and Gatsby himself…”
Congratulations, your first paragraph is complete.
BODY PARAGRAPHS
Begin with a topic sentence that mentions both the supporting argument you will be discussing and refers back to your thesis. You must do this for each topic sentence. A simple example might be, “Fitzgerald uses the characters of the Buchanans/Wilson/Gatsby to demonstrate that he feels the American dream has failed.” Next write a subtopic sentence. A subtopic sentence previews the arguments you are about to make. It should say something like, “this can be best seen here, here and here.” Obviously the “here, here and here” will include a clear preview of the arguments you are about to make. An example might be…”We can see this through Tom’s constant cheating, their refusal to take responsibility for the damage they cause and the fact that they do not even need to work at all to support their lifestyle.” Next begin to argue each point you are trying to prove. Be sure to include textual evidence(usually a quote to support your claim…but occasionally it is exploration of an event or events from the plot). The examples you choose should illustrate that the Buchanans are immoral and do not work hard yet are rich. So clearly then the American dream is not at play in their lives. A good breakdown might be two examples of immorality and one discussion of lack of hard work. Finish your paragraph with a LINKING SENTENCE. A linking sentence is NOT a concluding sentence. A topic sentence recaps a paragraph. A linking sentence provides a link to your next body paragraph.
Examples:
Topic sentence. Clearly then we can see how Fitzgerald used the Buchanans to show the American dream was a failure.
Linking sentence: Fitzgerald’s rejection of the American dream is also evident in his representation of other characters in the novel.
Body Paragraph two is exactly like body paragraph one except now you discuss George Wilson. In the case of Wilson you will need to show that he is a good man who works hard but is not rewarded. Again, you can see how the dream is not working in the case of Wilson. A good breakdown might be two examples of being a good man and one example of lack of hard work.
Body Paragraph three will discuss Gatsby. Same structure. A topic sentence followed by a subtopic sentence, followed by argumentation of your evidence finishing with a CONCLUDING sentence. Again two examples of immorality and one of lack of hard work should best help you argue your case.
Finally we come to the concluding paragraph. The purpose of this paragraph is to recap your essay. Begin by restating your thesis. “So it is evident that Fitzgerald used characters to demonstrate that he felt the American dream had failed.” Then you recap what you feel were your most compelling arguments from each body paragraph. Something like this, “We can see this through the constant infidelity of the Buchanans, the unrewarded hard work of Wilson and the illegal activities of Gatsby.” Now finish your essay with something that enhances the importance of your essay. Something like, ” Although it was written nearly one hundred years ago it seems that people still cling fruitlessly to a belief in the validity of the failed dream.”
