Write an essay on the kind of “detective” the main character is in “The Parker Shotgun.” Sue Grafton’s Kinsey Millhone is obviously a character who has to solve a mystery.
Your essay’s main idea will be “How ‘The Parker Shotgun’ is a typical detective story.” Your essay’s development will rely on readings in your text as well as any other readings you can find on what this sort of detective story does and is — not just any detective story, but the kind this particular story is. I mean, it’s obviously not a police detective story. It’s obviously not a murder mystery detective story, and it’s not an amateur detective story. So what kind is it? And how are the elements of THAT KIND of story used by Grafton? How does the story express the rules of the genre? What does each character have to be like? What does the detective have to be like? How does Grafton follow these conventions (rules)?
Your essay should be the usual, about 2-3 pages, 5 paragraphs minimum.
i posted the short story in additional materials

Respond to one of the following in your initial post:
1. Like Oedipus, Caesar receives a dire prophecy that proves tragic. Explain how Shakespeare’s view of fate seems similar to and different than that of Sophocles in Oedipus the King.
2. At the end of the play, Marc Antony calls Brutus “the noblest Roman of them all.” What does he mean, and do you agree? Use specifics from the text of the play to support your argument.

Our in-class work over the last few weeks has been to focus on the characterization of the various inhabitants of Cascadu, Trinidad in Lovelace’s Is Just a Movie. For your third analysis paper, you’re going to have a bit of fun and incorporate a creative writing component into your papers. Technically, you might argue that this is not an analysis paper; however, I would argue that in order to convincingly transport a character from the novel into our society today requires a close analysis of the character, their personalities, motivations, desires, appearance, interactions with others etc. (in other words, the characterization of the character).
Part 1 – Creative writing assignment:
The character cannot be Sonnyboy or Kangkala.
The temporal setting must be 2020-2021
The geographic setting can be anywhere on this planet.
Choice of genre: you may choose from either prose fiction or drama
You should create 2 scenes (basically 1-1/2 page micro chapters) each focusing on different characters – basically using similar strategies Lovelace uses in his novel
Today’s political climate must be part of the overall scenes. Think of the way Lovelace focuses on the Black Power Movement in the late 60s/early 70s. What political climate do you want to be part of your creative narrative?
The actions and dialogue of the characters must be in-keeping with the actions and dialogue of the characters in the novel.
You might find the postings for our in-class work useful as a repository of our discussions about the events/characters in the novel. Your RPs should also help
Word count: between 750 and 1000 words
Part 2 – Reflection on choices:
What is your rationale for the way you represented Lovelace’s characters (make specific references to the novel)
Dig into Is Just a Movie and find examples of indirect characterization (speech, actions, thoughts, and dialogue) and direct characterization (physical description, profession, passions, and pursuits) to support your theories/ideas.
What was most difficult aspect for you to complete for this assignment, and why do you think this is the case?
What was the easiest aspect for you to complete for this assignment, and why do you think this is the case?
Word count: approximately 250 words

Instructions
Copy the section headings and questions below into your document, and complete each one individually. Your answers to the first two questions will be based on your Research Proposal and Background Research assignment.
Research Question and Information Needs
What is your approved research question?
What are the specific kinds of information that you will need to find in order to answer your research question (list at least four)?
Source One
Source One Citation and Annotation:
Write an MLA 8th Edition citation* for a source that meets one of the information needs you identified above, or another piece of information that will help you address your research question. Include a link to the full text of the source, even if a link is not required as part of the citation. For sources from library databases, be sure to use the permalink/bookmark/stable URL tool to generate a link (do not copy the link from your browser’s address bar). For print books, use the link tool in the library catalog (books+) to generate a link.
Write a reflection annotation for this source. Your annotation should be at least 150 words, and must use your own words. Complete annotations include:
A summary of the source, including an overview of its main points, arguments made, research presented, topics covered, etc.
An evaluation of the source, including an assessment of its quality, accuracy, objectivity, purpose, thoroughness, etc.
A reflection on the source’s usefulness for your research, including which information need(s) it meets, how helpful it is, how it affects your thinking on the topic, how well it addresses your research question, etc.
What type of source is this (for example, book, scholarly article, magazine article, newspaper article, government document, website, blog post, video, photograph, etc.)?
Of all the sources you found during your search for this piece of information, how/why did you choose this particular source and/or this type of source?
Source Two
Source Two Citation and Annotation:
Write an MLA 8th Edition citation* for a source that meets a different information need you identified above, or another piece of information that will help you address your research question. Include a link to the source (see detailed instructions under Source One above).
Write a reflection annotation for this source. Your annotation should be at least 150 words, and must use your own words (see detailed instructions under Source One above).
What type of source is this (for example, book, scholarly article, magazine article, newspaper article, government document, website, blog post, video, photograph, etc.)?
Of all the sources you found during your search for this piece of information, how/why did you choose this particular source and/or this type of source?
*The two sources have to be from one of these. Please let me know which ones you chose. Pick only two but they both have to be different sources:
-one non-fiction book, in either print or ebook form, from the SBCC Luria Library that is not a reference book or textbook;
-one full-text peer-reviewed scholarly article from a library database;
-one visual media source such as a photograph or video; and
-one additional full-text written source, which may be a website (unless you used Wikipedia or a website for your background research, in which case you will need an additional book or article from the library for your in-depth research).
*** The research question adjustment is optional.

In your paper, you are citing Chao, et al. and Stevens and an article by Turkle

In your paper, you are citing Chao, et al. and Stevens and an article by Turkle that is not the article I gave you. You cite Khosrovani. You cite Sadri.
Uh huh. And the problem here is that A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT group of people show up in your Annotated Bib. It’s like I asked what is for dessert, you say PIE and bring out ICE CREAM.
Look, Hyoungjin, I want you to RE-DO the research for this paper. I want you to ONLY use ProQuest Global News Stream as a database NOT Ebsco Host. Rewrite it and I will regrade it.
Here, look at this CHECKLIST of things that should have been done for the Part II draft:
1. You should have, obviously, a completed Part ONE in which you INTRODUCE the idea that social media and the internet can be harmful to people in various ways, and which you prove by looking at the class sources, Twenge, Turkle, Shaeffer, etc.
2. In Part ONE, you should have a FOCUS, some smaller area of how our tech is harmful to us (to create an example, I will pretend that I am writing a research paper about an increase in teen suicides and social media)
3. In Part TWO, you need to have RESEARCH which you must SUMMARIZE and QUOTE from and CITE which proves the argument you are making (for my fictitious paper, I need to find authoritative articles which demonstrate that there is a correlation between teen suicide and social media use, and I need to explain how and why one leads to the other)
4. In this course, you are ONLY allowed to use the CCP databases for research. In fact, your research MUST come from the ProQuest Global News Stream database. You should have at least FOUR articles, and these articles should form the majority of your Part TWO. (You can add articles from other sources of information, but these will only be in addition to the work that you MUST do on the database)
5. You need to have an ANOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY that gives me the CORRECT MLA or APA citation for EACH database source, and which describes, briefly, how EACH source will be used in your research essay
You need to follow these steps carefully. Ok?
