How has the social landscape of East Austin been defined through Environmental Hazards?
What are the demographic disparities associated with the proposed US-Mexico border fence?
Environmental Justice issues of Superfund sites in Houston, Texas
Fracking and the oil/gas boom in The Eagle Ford Shale, South Texas
A flood history of Buffalo Bayou, hazards, and mitigation
Urban Sprawl and the Automobile in the Metroplex
Effects of climatic change on Edwards aquifer
The Galveston seawall and Hurricane hazards mitigation

Part 1) Literature Review Manuscript- All students will prepare a 3,000-word literature review on their research topic that is well written and organized into the three lines of research. The literature review manuscript needs a minimum of 60 sources.
Part 2) Publication Manuscript – Following the literature review you will create a second document from this research that aids in your scholarly advancement.
Undergraduate students and Advanced certificate students will synthesize their research into a concise 750-word ‘Research Statement’ needed for application into a graduate program of your choosing. This research statement demonstrates mastery of a chosen topic and proposes how your prospective research question can extend knowledge on the topic

(3) Full Documentary: Cruel And Unusual – YouTube (you dont have to watch it all, just an idea of what to right about)
After you’ve finished watching a documentary, please post a brief summary of the film on the discussion board.
To receive full-credit please follow these guidelines:
-Write a minimum of 1 paragraph (I recommend typing in Word or Google docs first, saving and then copy/paste into Canvas).
-What film did you choose and why?
-Have you or someone you know personally experienced a tornado or hurricane related event? Where did you (or them) experience the severe weather event? etc
-Describe what you learned about severe weather events from the video. You may include information from what you learned from other module material (i.e. convection currents and fronts). Did the films help you visualize the textbook material?
-Reflect on any misconceptions you may have had prior to watching the video and/or information that you learned or found interesting.

Please see attached guidelines.
For the assignment, you will choose one informal settlement for further study. Your choices
are: Rocinha favela (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), Khayelitsha township (Cape Town, South Africa),
or Tambora slum (Jakarta, Indonesia). You will then choose one of the following dimensions of
everyday life: gender roles and relations; livelihoods; housing issues; or health hazards. Prepare
a brief report that provides sufficient contextual information about the area (e.g., 1-2 pages
about its historical emergence, relative location, population characteristics), and then a report
on the dimension you chose based on the most up-to-date knowledge you can find (2-3 pages).

Last week, we learned about tectonic forces generated inside the earth. Generally speaking, these forces build up landforms. This week, we turn our attention to the gradational processes that continually reshape earth’s surface. Weathering, erosion, and deposition can create beautiful landforms such as the Grand Canyon and Great Lakes. These gradational processes can also create natural hazards such as sinkholes and mass wasting events (landslides, mudslides, rock fall, etc.). Sometimes these events cause sudden tragedies, other times they worsen over long periods of time. Unfortunately, people are impacted by several of these events each year. Using Chapters 15 and 17 of your textbook and web resources, research mass wasting events and/or sinkholes and choose one specific event to share information about in this week’s discussion board. The event you choose must have been caused at least in part by natural processes. (For instance, a building that falls simply because of poor construction does not qualify here.)A) Provide the type (landslide, sinkhole, etc.), location, and date of the event. B) Provide an overview and suspected cause(s) of the event. C) List casualties, injuries, and damages. D) Provide two possible mitigation strategies for dealing with this type of event (mass wasting or sinkhole). E) Provide a link to at least one reference about this event.short answer, 1 paragraph

Earthweek Diary
Hi Class! Here’s a new collection of interesting items from this past week!
By now, everyone has this down, but for those that may need a refresher on WHAT TO DO for this assignment, please see the Discussion Instructions document. Please be sure to follow the instructions before posting a response in order to gain maximum participation points.
Briefly:
Thoroughly read through the entire 1-page Earthweek Diary below. Then Select ONE featured topic in the Diary that you found especially interesting or significant in some way.
Do a quick search to find out anything more that you can add about the topic that interested you. Or select a similar, related item you discover in your search. Choose and capture a map, photo, video clip, document, or other item to share in your reply, and then,
POST to the discussion board a comment or brief description of what you found out and insert the graphic -photo, map, etc. in your posting so the entire class can check it out and learn something new as well. That’s it! For maps and photos especially, embed the actual map or photo instead of a LINK to the photo. SHOW us in your posting. Also, for video clips or web site links – be sure to INSERT > LINK > to enter the URL so it is “HOT” for us anxious readers who want to just click and go see for ourselves!
Notes:
Keep it brief – a paragraph or so is all that is required. Pick a single concept or point or two to remark upon – this is not the place for a full book report – but SHOW and TELL us something new!
It’s perfectly OK to remark on a topic that someone has already contributed on. Simply add to the discussion with a different map, photo, or link, and offer your own commentary.
Please reply to each others posts now and then, introduce yourselves to each other, share additional stories if you like. Your original discussion posting on the Weekly Diary topic you selected is required and counted for point value – but replying to your classmates demonstrates courtesy and harmonizes our class. Support each other!
OK! Here’s the CURRENT Earthweek Diary for the week ending Friday, July 09, 2021. Look it over, find something out that you can add to any one item (don’t forget to grab a map, photo, doc or link!) – and then Post to Share!

Example:
Recent rainfall hasn’t helped out farmers in the Mid-West, because this year’s crop is already gone. But the rain has helped lower drought levels in some states and it still might help crops mature. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has predicted that 2012 will have the lowest corn per acre since 1995. More than half of the nation’s corn crop is listed as poor and farmers have planted the most corn since 1937. Despite all the negatives, this year’s crop is predicted to be the eighth largest crop on record.
This article is a human-environment interaction. The farmers work the land to grow crops to feed cattle which feed humans. The farmers changed the landscape by clearing land and by growing huge fields of one crop. The drought is also a human-environment interaction. Scientists believe that climate change is caused by excessive amounts of carbon dioxide do to human’s using fossil fuels. Because of human induced climate change it caused the Mid-West to receive less rainfall, which hurts the farmer’s yields. This is a regional issue because if the grain harvest is small it will affect the supply to the rest of the country. Food and fuel prices will increase. The article is also globalization. America’s grain harvest is interconnected throughout the world. The drought affects food supply and drives up prices globally.
This article relates to me because my family farms around 400 acres and we have been hit hard by the drought. Earlier this summer our corn looked terrific and we thought we were going to have a good year, but we counted our chickens before they hatched.
Pitt, David. 13 Sept. 2012. Drought report: Recent rain brings relief to key farming states during unfolding corn harvests . Fox News, http://www.foxnews.com/us/2012/09/13/rain-eases-drought-as-midwest-corn-harvest-unfolds/#ixzz27tsaydPH.
This is an example I was given. It appears the first paragraph is giving context to the issue relating to geography. The second paragraph explains how it reaches two aspects of geograpgy (human-environment interaction or physcial/spatiaal geopragy).
The third is about how it relates to the writer. Let me know when you get to this so I can tell you or write about how it relates to me.
