Twelve-step groups are the foundation and most widely recognized of nearly all addiction recovery programs. Twelve-step groups include Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, and Gamblers Anonymous. Although the primary focus of twelve-step groups is addiction recovery, group support allows individuals to share their strengths, experiences, and hopes with each other. The twelve-step recovery process is a set of principles—known as steps—that are used toward addiction recovery. For example, the steps include abstinence from addictive substances or behavior, positive social relationships, positive physical and emotional health, and improved spiritual strength (Mejta, Naylor, & Maslar, 1994). Twelve-step groups are spiritually based—meaning while they acknowledge a “Higher Power” —they are not associated with any organized religion or dogma (Alcoholics Anonymous, 2012). In addition, during and after treatment, the twelve-step community is available for ongoing support
In addition to Twelve-Step groups other self-help recovery groups have developed in more recent years. For example Rational Recovery, Smart Recovery, Moderation Management, Women for Sobriety Secular Organizations for Sobriety (S.O.S.), and LifeRing Secular Recovery. These organizations support people identifying themselves as having an issue with drugs and alcohol but do not adhere to the same theoretical principles of a twelve step group.
To Prepare:
Attend three self-help group meetings, one from each of the following areas. You may attend one of these groups online.
An OPEN twelve-step meeting of your choice in your community (e.g., Alcoholics Anonymous [AA], Narcotics Anonymous [NA], Gamblers Anonymous [GA])
A self-help recovery group other than a twelve-step group (e.g., Rational Recovery, Smart Recovery, Moderation Management, Women for Sobriety Secular Organizations for Sobriety (S.O.S.), LifeRing Secular Recovery, etc.)
An Alcoholics Anonymous Family Group (e.g., Al-Anon).
For this Assignment, review this week’s resources, including the “Twelve-Step Groups” document, and research the development of the non-twelve step group you chose to attend. Consider your assumptions prior to and after attending each meeting chosen. Explore insights from attending the meeting and consider how this experience might be helpful as an addiction professional. Support your response with references to the resources and current literature.
Submit a 2 page paper that addresses the following:
Identify which 3 meetings you attended, and briefly describe the development of the non-twelve step meeting you attended.
Describe your initial assumptions before attending each meeting.
Explain any insights you gained from attending each meeting.
Compare and contrast your experience at the different meetings.
Explain how this experience might inform your future work as an addiction professional.
(You can research 3 self help groups in Hawaii and just make something up.)

For this Assignment, describe the overall process of the group and your feelings

For this Assignment, describe the overall process of the group and your feelings about the group experience.
Choose an evaluation method described by Toseland & Rivas (2017) or London (2007), and use it to evaluate your group (i.e., analysis of the product, group questionnaire).
Identify something you might have changed during this process and describe what you could have done differently.
Group Process Assignments should integrate course concepts related to group process. Assignments should demonstrate critical thought when applying course material to your group experience. Support ideas in your Assignment with APA citations from this week’s required resources.

Group therapy is one of the most successful interventions for adolescents. This is because of the nature of this stage of development and the need to belong to a group. Hearing the stories of other teens and knowing that their experiences and feelings are similar is very therapeutic. Another characteristic of the adolescent stage is a short attention span, so the clinical social worker should tailor exercises that initiate and sustain discussion for adolescents.
For this Assignment, watch the “Bradley” video.
In a 3-page paper, identify two opening exercises that you might recommend for a group of adolescent girls who were victims of human trafficking.
Describe the exercises in detail so that another social worker would be able to implement them.
Explain ways these exercises might be effective in creating a comfortable environment for these teenage girls.
Support your rationale with the literature. For example, what does the literature say about teenage girls who have been arrested for prostitution/human trafficking and who openly discuss their experiences?
How do these exercises promote group cohesion and encourage these teens to talk openly?

As a clinical social worker, evaluating the effectiveness of clinical strategies

As a clinical social worker, evaluating the effectiveness of clinical strategies is an expectation of the NASW Code of Ethics (2017). Sometimes, clinical strategies and techniques that are effective in one setting may not work in another situation. It is important to understand what works and what doesn’t.
Also, self-assessment is an integral part of becoming a clinical social worker.
Describe the strategy (assigned in Week 7) you implemented in your Group Project.
Describe the process and the level of difficulty/comfort you found in doing this Assignment.
Explain how this strategy may or may not have empowered or supported the group.
Describe the progress of the group in completing the project/goal.
At this point, the literature review and the advantages and disadvantages should be complete.
Group Process Assignments should integrate course concepts related to group process. Assignments should demonstrate critical thought when applying course material to your group experience. Support ideas in your Assignment with APA citations from this week’s required resources.

Addiction is a disease of the mind, a disease of obsession, and a disease of iso

Addiction is a disease of the mind, a disease of obsession, and a disease of isolation. The role of a particular substance, whether it is alcohol, opiates, marijuana, gambling, food, or sex, is merely the symptom of the disease, not the disease itself. Any substance has the potential to be abused due to the addiction disease itself. Many naively believe that merely removing the substance from the addicted person will “cure them.” If the disease of addiction were that simple, this disease would not be a rampant social problem.
“The idea of addiction being a neurological disorder is critical to understanding its development and the recovery process” (Recovery Connection, n. d.). There are a variety of reasons and opportunities that support people with addiction seeking help. Whether from internal turmoil and conflict, outside interventions, or a combination of both, clients will seek to stop the addiction cycle. The goal is to develop a healthier lifestyle called recovery. It may take months, years, or decades before this process leads to the path of recovery (Recovery Connection n. d.).
For this Assignment, review this week’s resources and explore co-occurring disorders and their impact on addiction or addictive behavior. You also examine how an individual’s addiction impacts other individuals or society. Support your response with references to the resources and current literature.
Submit a 2-page paper that addresses the following:
Provide two examples of how symptoms of a co-occurring disorder may influence efforts to stop the abuse of a substance.
Describe the symptoms and how substance abuse or an addictive behavior might temporarily counteract the symptoms of the co-occurring disorder.
Explain how the development of a ritual around substance abuse or addictive behavior can be used to strengthen an addiction or be used to treat an addiction.
Explain why the type of substance or other obsession is relevant when it comes to the disease of addiction itself.
Describe three examples of how an individual’s addiction might impact others or society.

Ideally, the multi-factor treatment approach will include a personalized treatment plan. As clients might have different needs, a personalized treatment plan is significant. For example, a client who has an addiction may require a different treatment plan then a client who needs to be hospitalized for physical complications due to their addiction.
While several components of the approach play an equally important part in the treatment plan, it is important that clients seeking sobriety and addiction treatment address their physical ailments before moving into the process of recovery where their emotional and spiritual struggles may be addressed effectively. Furthermore, a personal treatment plan should take into account the client’s culture, age, gender, and access to resources. All of these elements influence the final treatment plan.
For this Assignment, review the week’s resources. Then, review the scenarios provided in the “Assignment Scenarios: Treatment Approach” document, and select two scenarios as the focus of your Assignment. Explore the differences in the scenarios provided and consider how a biopsychosocial-spiritual treatment approach may be applied differently for each individual. Support your response with references to the resources and current literature.
Submit a 2- to 3-page paper that addresses the following:
Briefly describe the two individuals whom you selected from the scenarios.
Explain how you would apply a biopsychosocial-spiritual treatment approach to each individual.
Explain how addiction impacts the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual well being of each individual differently.
Explain how these differences might influence treatment approaches.

Relapse prevention developed from the understanding that alcohol and other substance dependencies are difficult to treat. Even if treatment is successful, there is always the risk of relapse.  Rates of relapse vary depending on factors such as the type of treatment and the substance used.
As your Capuzzi & Stauffer text notes, it is estimated that 90% of alcoholics return to drinking within a four-year period and 40–60% of drug users relapse. With the prevalence of relapse, it is important for addiction professionals to work closely with their clients to identify risks for relapse and to work with their clients to develop strategies to avoid relapsing.
For this Assignment, review the video, “Experiencing a Traumatic Event,” and consider how the traumatic event resulted in the individual seeking addiction treatment. Support your response with references to the resources and current literature.
Submit a 2- to 3-page paperthat addresses the following:
Create a relapse prevention plan for Greg.
Identify the supports and risk factors for Greg’s possible relapse.
Describe the factors that will likely contribute to Greg’s relapse .
Describe the specific interventions that you would suggest.
Explain the lifestyle changes that you would suggest Greg implement to avoid relapse.

Each member of a group contributes to the group’s dynamic even if the member is

Each member of a group contributes to the group’s dynamic even if the member is silent. As a clinical social worker, it is important to understand the dynamics you bring to a group and the role you tend to assume in a group setting. Every individual has his or her own way of interacting. Knowing your own personal style and the role you tend to choose will help you identify your strengths and weaknesses when working within a group.
For this Assignment, describe the dynamics of your Wiki Group. By this time, your group should have developed the family case study and defined the scope of the problem.
Reflect on your participation in the dynamics. What role have you assumed in the group? Have you used any empowerment strategies in moving the group forward? If not, what strategy could you implement?
Group Process Assignments should integrate course concepts related to group process. Assignments should demonstrate critical thought when applying course material to your group experience. Support ideas in your Assignment with APA citations from this week’s required resources.
(You can literally make up something for this one. You can write it as if I have been a great leader in the group. I have also attached the group project guidelines so that you have an idea of what the group wiki project is)

Clients may experience several traumatic events before seeking treatment. It may take a near-death experience such as alcohol poisoning or a tragic car accident before someone realizes that they need help. Or perhaps it is a friend or family member who initiates treatment by making a professional aware that one of their loved ones is struggling with an addiction. With the array of treatments available, addiction professionals must be able to assist clients by assessing their needs and guiding them in the right direction.
For this Assignment, review Prochaska and DiClemente’s Processes of Change.
Submit a 2- to 3-page paper that addresses the following:
Describe the first five steps in Prochaska and DiClemente processes of change model.
Explain how an addiction professional would intervene with the client at each stage.
Describe any challenges an addiction professional would have in each stage.
